Why We Don’t Sell Services À La Carte (And Why That Protects You Too)

We had a conversation recently with a client coming up for renewal. They had been with us for two years, they were happy with the work, and they wanted to continue. But they had one request: could they drop the security monitoring element and just keep the rest?

It was a fair question. They were looking at the budget, they felt like security had been quiet, and it seemed like a logical place to trim. We said no, and we explained why. This post is the longer version of that conversation.

Why Cherry-Picking Does Not Work

The reason we package our services the way we do is not commercial convenience. It is because the components are interdependent. Security monitoring works because it sits alongside a maintained, up-to-date system. A maintained system stays maintainable because security issues are caught early. Remove one part and the integrity of the rest is compromised.

This is not unique to what we do. Think about how a gym membership works. You pay for access to everything: the weights, the classes, the pool, the changing rooms. You do not get to pay for just the cardio equipment and use the showers for free. The facility works as a whole. The price reflects the whole.

The analogy holds for managed technology services. The value is in the system, not the individual components. A security upgrade applied to an unmaintained platform is less effective than the same upgrade on a properly maintained one. A well-maintained platform without security monitoring has an unmonitored vulnerability window. Each part depends on the others being in place.

The Risk You Take When You Opt Out

When a client asks to remove an element from their package, we do not just say no and move on. We explain what they are actually opting out of, specifically and honestly.

“I thought the quiet months meant nothing was happening. The audit showed us that quite a lot was happening. We just were not seeing it.”

Security, in particular, is quiet until it is not. The months where nothing appears to be happening are often the months where monitoring is doing its job. Remove the monitoring and you do not get months where nothing happens. You get months where you do not know what is happening.

That distinction matters enormously when something eventually goes wrong, and with enough time, something always does.

What This Means for How We Work

We are transparent about this from the very first conversation. Our packages are structured the way they are because that is what it takes to deliver the outcome we are promising. We are not in the business of selling components. We are in the business of delivering working, secure, maintained systems.

If a client’s budget has genuinely changed, we will have a straight conversation about what is possible and what the trade-offs are. Sometimes the right answer is a smaller scope done properly. It is never a full scope done partially, because partial cover is not cover.

“We pushed back at first. Looking back, we are glad they held the line.”
