The Easiest Sale You’ll Make This Year Is to Someone Who Already Pays You

Cold selling is hard for a simple reason: the prospect has no reason to trust you yet.

One of our own observations captures it well: “Cold calling is much harder than referrals because prospects don’t have pre-existing trust.” And asking someone to part with £15,000 on a cold call is difficult even for the right kind of company.

Your existing clients have already crossed that line. They know how you work, and they’ve already said yes once.

Expansion isn’t upselling

Done badly, “the second sale” feels like being handed a menu after you’ve eaten. Done well, it’s simply noticing a problem the client hasn’t yet solved, and telling them honestly.

Here’s what that looked like for real businesses in our conversations:

  • A telecoms business noticed that “80% of our customers only use virtual numbers”, which is a natural opening to talk about phone systems, broadband and other services those customers plainly need.
  • A security-focused report we delivered led to all clients saying yes immediately. It didn’t work through a hard sell. The client could see the risk in plain language.
  • One client said the most valuable thing we do when they’re proud of their build is the opposite of celebrating: “the job is to surface what’s fragile.”

The pattern: the second sale grows out of something true and useful you noticed, not a discount.

Three ways to spot the second sale

  1. What did they ask about that wasn’t in scope? Every “while you’re here, could you also…” is a signal.
  2. What did you have to work around? Fragile systems, missing documentation and manual workarounds are all future projects.
  3. What has changed since you started? New tools, new team members and new pressures create new needs.

Watch the pricing conversation

Be ready for objections. One accountant-led client refused an unlimited support retainer and reduced everything to time multiplied by rate. That’s fair. Some people trust only the lens they use to run their own business.

The response isn’t to push harder. It’s to translate your work into their language: itemise, show the ranges, and let them choose. Clients often prefer a breakdown they can phase over a lump sum.

A low-effort habit that works

One of our clients reports that short weekly video updates for their client base are reactivating dormant clients. It’s low pressure and it keeps you visible when they finally have a need.

Look back at your last five clients. What did you notice for them that you never mentioned? Reply and tell me. I’m happy to sanity-check it.
